Master 2 Etude des climats de la Terre (ECLAT) - Studying the climates of the earth

Course Details

Objectives : This UVSQ master’s degree is accredited by Paris-Saclay University.
Students will have a “Paris-Saclay” registration and will receive a diploma from Paris-Saclay University.

The objective of the M2 ECLAT course is to train young experts in mastering the observation and measurement tools of physical and geochemical parameters which describe the climate system on different time scales, as well as in the different analysis methods. of these parameters.

The ECLAT course targets areas with high societal and economic challenges which are at the crossroads of different concerns: physico-chemical interactions between the fluid and solid compartments of the Earth; means of measurement and digital methods of analysis; natural and anthropogenic climate changes and their signatures and impacts; climate risks on environments, ecosystems and societies; management of energy resources.

Degree Level (EU) : 7 - (EQC level or equivalent)

Acquired skills during the training : Analyze the elements of natural and forced variabilities of the Earth's climates, on different time scales (current and past climates, seasonal to decadal), by restoring their interrelationships in a structured manner;

Mobilize the relevant tools (analysis, theory, experimentation) to extract information from a set of observations, by identifying the relevant parameters, by formulating the appropriate hypotheses and approximations;

Carry out model - data comparisons to quantify the climatic mechanisms involved (feedback, forcing, non-linearities of the system, etc.), to constrain digital climate models while analyzing the measurements obtained by instrumentation (remote sensing, in situ sampling, spectroscopy) with their strengths and weaknesses;.

Conceptualize, structure and conduct an individual or team scientific project and conduct a critical analysis of the results, relying on scientific vocabulary adapted in French and English to describe the problem.

Do scientific monitoring.
Communicate the results of their work, in French and English, both orally and in writing.

Targeted careers : The outcomes of the 'ECLAT' standard course are of two types: 1/ continuation of a thesis in an academic laboratory or in co-supervision with companies and 2/ integration of companies and design offices in relation to the professions of the geology and physics of climate and environment.
The 'ECLAT' standard course offers a training offer closely linked to the industrial sector (teaching by industrial engineers, research internship and doctorate in R&D). Students from this training can thus be recruited in public (Universities, CNRS, Andra, IRSN, etc.) or private research, in companies in the space sector (CNES, ACRI-ST, CLS), and in large companies (automotive groups, banks, insurance companies, etc.) or public or private establishments which are keen to integrate specialists in the global environment and climate risks...
